1 · BOTTOM LINE

TAPE — Gold held $4,216 (+1.43% 1d) while silver moved +2.73% and copper miners (COPX) moved +4.29%. Miners vs metal: GDX +2.95% vs GLD +1.57% — and the GDX/GLD ratio is +0.5% over 5 days (-4.7% over 20).

BALANCE SHEET — The fear trade is overdone on the numbers: Newmont sits on net cash (net debt/EBITDA -0.22×) with a 38% trailing FCF margin and a 7.7% FCF yield at today's price. Freeport: 5.6% FCF yield, 0.70× leverage. These are not 2012 balance sheets.

MACRO — The Sept FOMC minutes showed most policymakers expect another hike by year-end — and gold rose anyway (+1.43% 1d). Silver closed at $61.05 (+2.73% 1d). Hawkish Fed, rising metal: the fear bid is beating the rate bid right now.

FRIDAY'S TAPE, CLOSER — From the Bloomberg reporting desk: bullion ran as much as 1.8% on Friday, traded above $4,200/oz, and closed +1.5% at $4,194.24 in New York — a weekly gain with the fund crowd finally returning. Inflows into gold-backed ETFs have hit a four-year high, and September was the strongest month of net ETF inflows since 2022. The surprise tailwind: Trump's announcement that Russia agreed to release diesel into global markets eased the fuel squeeze that had kept central banks tight — loosening one of gold's biggest headwinds. The honest counterweight: gold is still down ~20% since the US–Iran war erupted in late February, because that same energy-cost surge drove central banks to tighten and punished non-yielding metal. Silver moved with it: +2.8% to $60.82 in New York pricing. (Subscriber detail, Bloomberg, Oct 8–9.)

THE HAWKISH MATH — The September minutes (released Oct 7) show the Fed more unified than the tape feared: all 19 officials backed the hike — a unanimous voter decision taking the target range to 3.75–4%, the first increase since July 2023. And "most participants assessed that another increase in the target range for the federal funds rate would likely be appropriate by year end" (Bloomberg, Oct 7). Chair Kevin Warsh framed the move as removing a "dose of accommodation." Two caveats for the gold thesis: markets have since repriced October-hike odds from ~70% to ~20% — Vice Chair Jefferson and the NY Fed's Williams said the Fed has time to assess — and Wednesday's CPI could revive the near-term hike calls. The fear bid is winning today; the rate path can still bite it.

3 · THE ONE CHART — MINERS VS METAL

GDX (miners) vs GLD (gold), indexed to 100 six months ago. Shaded: last 5 trading days — the catch-up.

GDX 5-day+1.71%
GLD 5-day+1.17%
GDX/GLD 5-day+0.53%
GDX vs 200-day-2.0%

Read: after trailing gold for weeks, miners outperformed the metal 4 of the last 5 sessions. Mean-reversion of the miner discount — not yet a trend.

Subscriber read — where the bid is coming from: September was the strongest month of net inflows into gold-backed ETFs since 2022, and inflows are running at a four-year high. Institutional money is returning to the metal first — and the miner discount usually closes only after the ETF bid reappears. The undercurrent behind the catch-up is real; the trend is still auditioning.

What to do with it: the ETF bid is the number to watch, not the daily price. If October's inflow pace matches September's, the GDX/GLD catch-up has its funding confirmed and the miner discount keeps closing; if flows roll over, the catch-up stalls. The single risk to both legs: Wednesday's CPI — a hot print that the Fed reads as broad-based would revive the hike bid and punish non-yielding metal fast. Professionals in the space (IR, corporate, allocation): the mispriced fact to carry into any meeting this week is Newmont at net cash, 38% FCF margins — the fear narrative is running on 2012 data.

4 · NARRATIVE vs REALITY

"Mining stocks are uninvestable at these capex levels." — the prevailing market narrative. The trailing-12-month cash register, from filed financials (through Q2 2026), says otherwise:

Source: FMP Premium quarterly financials, computed from filed statements (TTM ending 2026-06-30); market caps at 2026-10-08 close. NEM's net-cash position is the single most mispriced fact in the senior gold space this morning.
